I love to read! However, since giving birth to my first child, I developed a habit of not finishing books. For the past 3 1/2 years, my nightstand is always cluttered and stacked with half read books. I start a book, read about 1/4 – 1/2 of the way through, and then I discover yet another book I really really want to read. So, I start that book and forget about the other book. This cycle continues and is the reason why I have several books sitting on my nightstand waiting to be finished.
I have never been one to make reading goals like, read one book every week. I never really had to because I was always reading and it felt like a cardinal sin to start and book and not finish it (before kids, that is). So, in an attempt to clear up my nightstand and finish some of these books, my reading list & goals follow:
What the Bible Says About Parenting (John MacArthur) – I’ve heard that this is an excellent book. What is our child’s greatest need? Salvation.
Read by August 30th.
Secrets of the Baby Whisperer (Tracy Hogg) – I’m skeptical about this one, but I was hoping to find a few tips to help Lillian take longer naps.
Read by September 13th.
Parenting in the Pew:Guiding Your Children Into the Joy of Worship (Robbie Castleman) – This book is on loan to me from a good friend, so I would like to get it read and returned to her! Here is a portion of the description from amazon.com. “Because we are created to praise God both now and forever, we must take our children’s worship seriously. Worship, Robbie writes, is “the most important thing you can ever train your child to do.” With infectious passion, nitty-gritty advice and a touch of humor, she shows us how we can help our children (from toddlers to teenagers) enter into worship.
Read by September 27th.
The Power of a Praying Parent (Stormie Omartian) – I am hoping this book will help me to develop a longer and better prayer list for each of my children.
Read by October 11.
A Woman After God’s Own Heart (Elizabeth George) – This book, so far, is excellent! A great book on biblical womanhood and has a lot of practical information (which I love)!
Read by October 25.
My goal is to read a book every two weeks. I plan on taking notes instead of just doing a quick read because most of these books are going to have a lot of valuable information and ideas that I can’t implement all at once.
I should add that in the past 1 1/2 months I have read all four Twilight books and Scarlett (the sequel to Gone with the Wind). I usually don’t have a problem finishing just for fun books! That’s why I don’t have any on my list right now.
